Save on smart thermostats from Google, Ecobee, Amazon, and Honeywell.

One way to celebrate Earth Day this year, besides buying refurbished and used goods, is reducing your energy consumption. Whether you’re trying to cool down in summer or warm up in winter, you can optimize your energy usage by upgrading to a smart thermostat.

Save on smart thermostats from Google, Ecobee, Amazon, and Honeywell this Earth Day. Just check if it’s compatible with your home’s HVAC system as well as if it requires a C-wire adapter.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat is the most affordable on this list and ideal for those who already have Alexa smart devices at home. This Energy Star-certified device can track your HVAC energy consumption and find ways to reduce it. Remotely control the temperature via the Alexa app. For voice control, you’ll need an Alexa-enabled device like an Echo Dot, or you can use the Alexa app on your phone. Plus, in select areas, you can get up to $70 back in rebates from energy providers.

A PCMag Editors' Choice pick, and probably the most popular smart thermostat on this list, the Google Nest Thermostat makes it easy to control your home’s heating and cooling systems, allowing you to set temperature schedules and monitor energy usage. It supports the Nest Temperature Sensor so you can keep select rooms at a desired temperature. Unlike the Amazon Smart Thermostat, the Nest Thermostat is compatible with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice commands.

For a more advanced thermostat, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat actively learns your temperature preferences at specific times, which allows it to auto-schedule when to heat or cool based on your habits.

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat is another Editors’ Choice pick and was one of PCMag’s Best of the Year award winners back in 2019. Although pricier, Ecobee’s thermostat comes with a remote room sensor, an accessory you’d normally have to purchase separately for other smart thermostats. It helps to keep temperatures uniform throughout your home, especially in areas far away from the thermostat. With a built-in microphone, you won’t need a separate smart device to use Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands, though it can interact with a variety of third-party smart home products if needed.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly Ecobee thermostat, the Ecobee Lite is cheaper but doesn’t include the smart sensor (though it is compatible if you end up buying it separately). No built-in mic means you’ll need a separate smart home device for voice commands.

A staple in thermostat technology, Honeywell has its own line of smart thermostats. The Smart Color Thermostat features a touch-screen color display. As well as allowing you to manually create a custom temperature schedule, it can also learn your preferences to help you achieve your preferred temperature when you need it. You also get monthly energy reports as well as personalized tips on reducing energy usage.

Meanwhile, the T5 features geofencing, sensing when you leave or return to your home via your smartphone and adjusting the temperature accordingly. Both thermostats are compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and more for voice commands.
