“Shallow Grave, Deep Water” – Magnum goes to extreme lengths to uncover the truth about a crime which may have involved his dear deceased friend, Nuzo (Domenick Lombardozzi), on the CBS Original series MAGNUM P.I., Friday, April 8 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Magnum P.I. was, unfortunately, one of the shows on CBS that fell prey to the cancellation axe at the end of renewal season. The series, which is a reboot of the ’80s classic, had dipped in viewership like other shows on broadcast struggling with on the night watches, but it was still pulling in millions of viewers for the network.

It seems, for CBS, part of the issue was licensing costs not viewership issues. The lead producer of Magnum P.I. is Universal Television which means CBS had to license the show in order to air it on the network. With its promising audience pull, the potential for the series to be picked up seemed high especially with its producers shopping the show around and fans campaigning for its return as well.

Deadline reported in June that talks were ongoing for the series to be moved to NBC with an option for previous seasons of Magnum P.I. to air on USA Network. Did those talks hold up? Has the show been saved? Here’s what we know!

Yes! Magnum P.I. has been saved. News broke Friday, July 1 that NBC had picked up the series for 20 more episodes.

According to Deadline’s reporting, these episodes will be split into two seasons so there will be a season 6 of the show which is great news for fans. As is the news that there’s an option in the deal for more episodes of Magnum P.I. after it hits 96 episodes. That could mean the show does make it to the 100 episode milestone which would be quite the accomplishment in this TV era.

The reporting doesn’t state when viewers can expect season 5 to premiere on NBC, so we’ll have to wait and see whether Magnum P.I. will debut as a fall offer from the network or a midseason addition.

We should note that the cast is still being locked in. Before the deal finalized, options on the cast expired. But, per Deadline: “With an agreements on the order reached, the cast are now being picked up and are finalizing deals to return for the new seasons.”

So, we aren’t likely to see shake ups. We’ll keep you posted on more news as it comes in. Previous seasons airing on USA Network wasn’t mentioned in the latest reporting. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote!
