It’s in my nature to be loyal. But sometimes you need to expand your horizons. 

I have been a diehard Dyson fan for years. The Animal vacuum was the only thing that could keep up with the unrelenting output of hair my shedding dogs would leave all over the house. When the brand’s cordless vacuum came out, I didn’t think it could keep up with my life. But, I needed a more mobile device that was less cumbersome to carry up and down three flights of stairs. So, I ended up trying one out. While I still relied on my plug-in versions for big, messy jobs, the cordless was an impressive addition that helped me keep up with everyday cleaning and saved me from my fear of falling a down a flight of stairs and dying by vacuum. 

When I got the second iteration of Dyson’s cordless device, I thought the machine learning and the ability to go from carpet to hardwood was genius. I was also impressed by the suction, the soft brush attachment that picked up super fine particles on my floors, and the fact that it didn’t just blow the dirt I was sucking up into the air. My only design complaint was the trigger you’d have to engage to power the device during its entire use—it bothered my wrist and I always wondered if would eventually fail. A few weeks ago, I got my answer when I embarked on a major top-to-bottom cleaning of my apartment and the trigger stopped working all together. Needless to say, I wasn’t happy. So, I began my search for a replacement and discovered that LG offered a cordless solution. The reviews seemed positive—even from former Dyson loyalists, which in my mind was a good barometer. 

I am no stranger to LG. The company makes some great products that have kept my home healthy and clean throughout the years. In addition to their washers and dryers, which I think are some of the best on the market, I’m absolutely obsessed with my LG Styler steam closet that keeps my clothing fresh + clean and allergy free in addition to helping me save on dry-cleaning bills. I had no idea they made vacuums too. For whatever reason, I thought that this was new for the company. But, I was incorrect. 

“LG has been developing and manufacturing vacuums for over 40 years around the world—first as an OEM and more recently under the LG brand,” Dan Hayes, Senior Product Manager, Home Appliances at LG Electronics tells me. “Through their knowledge and leadership across 40+ years in the space, LG recognized a gap—limited consumer choice, usability, and performance in premium cordless stick vacuums. And in 2018 LG officially launched the CordZero A9 Stick Vacuum platform.” Since then the brand has launched two other editions. 

I ended up choosing the CordZero A9 Kompressor with the Power Mop Nozzle, which comes with a charging stand. Right off of the bat I noticed that LG’s vacuum is much quieter. It also doesn’t require holding a trigger down to initiate power, which improved my user experience. “LG recognized that consumers want to control and easily customize their cleaning. So we delivered multiple power/suction levels at the touch of a button, dual, removable batteries, and multiple floor heads all easily accessible via the Portable Charge Stand. So unlike other Stick vacuums, consumers have complete control of their cleaning,” explains Hayes. 

A few other standout features are LG’s technology that lets users clean without having to constantly empty the bin and it comes with two rechargeable batteries that deliver up to two hours of uninterrupted cleaning.

“With LG's unique Kompressor technology, users can enjoy more than double the bin capacity (compared to previous models) with a press of the lever while still enjoying an easy-to-maneuver, lightweight stick vacuum. Plus, the LG Smart Inverter Motor™ provides powerful suction on a range of floor types with five-step HEPA filtration that helps filter 99.9 percent of dust,” continues Hayes. “For added convenience, it comes with a portable charge stand that holds all the attachments and can be connected to the ThinQ app to access step-by-step guides for cleaning the filters and setting up smartphone reminders for routine maintenance.”

Feeling a little trigger-unhappy with my broken vacuum, I wanted to know what the expected lifecycle was for the CordZero. “The company offers a 10-year warranty on their smart invertor motor and their battery packs can easily be easily updated if there are any issues. In those instances, a replacement battery can be purchased ($99 on LG.com) and easily swapped in to get you back up and running in no time,” responds Hayes. “It's worth noting that most models already come with two batteries so users can enjoy uninterrupted cleaning for up to 120mins! Additionally, all LG products have removable, washable filters for longer life and better performance but are also easily replaceable. So ultimately between 10-year motor warranty and replaceable batteries and filters, LG consumers enjoy a long life with CordZero product.”

Also unique to LG’s vacuum is the Power Mop accessory that cleans hardwood floors and tile and delivers the perfect streak-free finish. “Simply fill the reservoir with regular tap water – no special solutions or harsh chemicals needed – snap on the attachment and go,” explains Hayes. “The washable, dual spinning microfiber pads are automatically moistened thanks to the vacuum's integrated water tank that can be removed for easy filling. Power levels can be adjusted with convenient fingertip controls (high, low, off levels) to match the mess that needs to be tackled.”  

So what is coming down the pike with LG’s next model? Hayes tells me, “In October, LG will be launching the All-in-One Tower: the first Fully Auto Empty Stick Vacuum featuring innovative technology that makes users’ vacuuming experience more convenient. This new model features an auto-emptying dust bin in the charging stand, so users don’t have to worry about making a mess or the dirty work of vacuuming. The charging stand also houses all the vacuum’s accessories and nozzles for easy storage and access.” 

While I still love Dyson, especially their air purifiers, when it comes to vacuums I think LG has outdone themselves and have created a product that rivals their competitor.
